Who Do You Work For? How to Be a Successful Independent Contractor

This class will explore the framework of interpreting as an Independent Contractor and will challenge the professional interpreter to exploit their own work potential beyond their current boundaries to maximize their income sources. It will offer perspectives on how to successfully market your language access services as a health care, legal, business, or community interpreter in order to expand your client list along with different avenues for language services. The class is designed to shift the mindset of an interpreter from that of an employee to a self-sufficient, successful independent contractor.

    Instructor Bio: Carlos Nuñez

    Carlos Nuñez grew up in Mexico and studied General Business at Eastern Michigan University. He returned to Oregon in 2015 to work as an independent contractor in the interpretation business and to assist in their family business. He is a court-certified Spanish interpreter and a certified medical interpreter with CCHI.

    The highlight of his interpreting career has been interpreting for Governor Kate Brown during her ongoing press conferences. Carlos enjoys working with nonprofits the most, particularly with organizations working on environmental issues and social justice issues. In his spare time, Carlos enjoys meditating, running, snowboarding, CrossFit, spending time with his family, volunteering, and traveling with his fiancée.
