Working with Patients with Sensory Processing Disorders

Health Care Interpreters may interpret appointments which involve Sensory Processing Disorders (SPD), a condition where the brain does not interpret messages from the senses of the body effectively. This class is designed to give a broad overview of SPD in adults and children and explore the areas of the brain that are affected by SPD in conditions such as Autism or ADHD. We will look into symptoms, the physical, psychological, and emotional effects, and the progression if there is no treatment. Interpreters will learn related terminology, best practices regarding environmental arrangements, various supports and treatments that are available. Interpreters will also learn about behaviors that contribute to patients becoming agitated which may create difficulty in interpreting between the affected LEP and provider. We will discuss best practices for interpreting for the LEP who may be affected by this broad category of symptoms.
