Provider Training: Cultural Awareness for Health Care Professionals

*This is not a CEU course offering.

The medical provider is constantly challenged to care for patients with diverse cultural practices and approaches to health care and healing. This course uses culture as a lens through which to view health care and the role of the medical provider. Culture is a system of learned customs, beliefs, and behaviors. Social ideology determines our perceptions of wellness, illness, health care, aging, and death. These vary from culture to culture and over time. This course explores traditional beliefs about illness compared to the causes attributed by Western scientists. We will look at traditional healing practices and modern medicine. And we will consider economic and political influences on health care.
