Best Practices in Interpreting for Patients with Dementia

This class gives Health Care Interpreters an understanding of the physical, psychological, and emotional effects of dementia, its causes, and the progression of the disease. The symptoms include pain, cognitive/memory and communication issues, which may create difficulty in interpreting the session between the LEP and the caregiver. We will learn related treatments and terminology associated with this disease, as well as some cultural aspects. Interpreters will also learn about factors that contribute to patients becoming agitated and potentially dangerous to themselves or others. We will discuss best practices for interpreting for the LEP who may be affected by this broad category of symptoms.
