Say What? Understanding Nonverbal Communication

We are always communicating, even when we are not speaking. How we dress, how we stand, our gestures, facial expressions, our tone of voice all speak for us. Nonverbal communication can emphasize or contradict what we are saying, or it can replace speech. This class brings awareness to nonverbal communication and how it affects our interpreting. In conversations, nonverbal communication is used to manage the flow through nonverbal cues. Interpreters who are able to read nonverbal communication can deliver a more comprehensive message. Interpreters should also be aware of their own nonverbal communication so as not to distract from the interpreting encounter. The class provides an overview of nonverbal communication and provides techniques to improve self-awareness of nonverbal communication.
