Cultural Awareness for Health Care Interpreters

This class uses culture as a lens by which to view health care and the role of the medical interpreter. Culture is a system of customs, beliefs and behaviors. Social ideology determines our views of wellness, disease, health care, aging, death and burial, which vary across cultures and over time. Differences between traditional and Western medicine are explored, as are economic and political influences in the area of health care. The medical interpreter is called upon to interpret culture and at times to advocate for the patient.
