Medical Interpreting in the Academic Setting

Health care interpreting for children whose health has an impact on their development and education may take place in a variety of backdrops including schools, child development centers or home visits for early childhood intervention. Developmental delays, physical, emotional, or behavioral issues all impact a child’s learning. This class is designed to prepare HCI’s for a variety of appointments such as development evaluations, eligibility or Individualized Education Programs meetings, parent/school administrator appointments. This class is designed to review terminology, protocol, standards of practice for interpreting in the academic setting.

    Instructor Bio: Mary Soots, B.A., M.A.

    Mary Soots, BA, MA is an Anthropologist, social researcher and policy analyst, supporting government and community organizations through outreach and advocacy. She is a nationally Certified Health Care Interpreter (Spanish) and former Director of Education Programs for the Oregon Health Care Interpreters Association (OHCIA). Mary provides training to interpreters and health professionals. Mary holds a M.A. and B.A. in Anthropology from Portland State University, a B.A. in International Studies, as well as Minor Degrees in Spanish and in Geography.
